As a side event of Yogyakarta Art Festival XXIV 2012 or Festival Kesenian Yogyakarta (FKY XXIV 2012) which will run from June 20 to July 5, 2012, a group of visual art artists in Yogyakarta hold a public space exhibition along Jalan Malioboro starting on Monday, June 11 until July 5, 2012. Entitled Outdoor Malioboro Exposition 2012, the exhibition is followed by more than 20 renowned sculpture artists such as Dicky Chandra, Nasirun, Komroden Haro, Noor Ibrahim, Wahyu Santoso, Amboro Liring, Stevan Buana, Dunadi, Edi Gundul, Yul Hendri, Purjito, and Timbul Raharjo.
According to chairman of the FKY XXIV 2012 committee, Timbul Raharjo, those three-dimensional works are displayed at least on 20 spots along Jalan Malioboro during the arrangement of FKY XXIV 2012 and even some works will be turned into a monumental work of the city’s hallmark street.
The Romantic Artvisory group from Sanggar Dewata Indonesia community will also participate in the event by presenting an installation work titled Barong Bangkal, a pig faced Balinese barong with body made of Javanese batik. This three-dimensional work will be displayed on June 20 at Malioboro Mall Yogyakarta as one of over 25 displayed artworks spread at over 25 places in Yogyakarta in a visual art exhibition titled ‘Future of Us’ following the official kick off of the FKY.
Themed ‘Back to Culture’, the Barong Bangkal aims to educate the public that there are traditions which need maintaining and preservation. Barong Bangkal is created as a collaboration of two different cultures, Balinese and Javanese, but still has the same root. The Barong will be paraded along with live gamelan music. The parade will also ask for donations to visitors along the street to support the cultural arts education program at an orphanage in Bantul. At the same time the Jogja Magic Community (KMJ) will perform a street magic action with visitors in a mass, attractive, and phenomenal performance.
