BIRD WATCHING

Indonesia is home to nearly twenty percent of the world's bird species. Some of these birds can be seen near Jogja in interesting surroundings.

Ketingan Hamlet, Sleman Regency
Several species of egrets and herons have taken up residence in Ketingan, where the local people won an award in 2003 for voluntarily protecting the birds.

Plawangan-Turgo Nature Reserve, Kaliurang
Ornithologists have listed 96 bird species in Plawangan-Turgo Nature, of which 26 are endemic. Many are endangered and difficult to see, such as orange-spotted bulbuls, red-breasted parakeets and Javan hawk-eagles. Mr. Christian Awuy, a pioneer in local ecotourism, is the expert bird-spotter of this area.

Southern Slopes of Mount Merapi
Several endangered species, including the orange-headed thrush and the changeable hawk-eagle make their homes on the southern slopes of Mount Merapi.
