Jogja is well-known throughout Indonesia
as a center for the arts thanks primarily to the
presence of ISI (Indonesia Institute of the Arts),
one of the largest advanced-learning art education
centers in Indonesia.
While some of Jogja's art institutions
are museums, others are galleries with works for
sale.

Located 5 km from downtown
Jogja, Affandi Museum lies on the banks
of the Gajah Wong River. The maestro designed
the unique architecture himself and resided
here until his death in 1990. Affandi is
known as a world-class multi talented impressionist
artist. On exhibition are over 300 of his
masterpieces, sculptures and statues, as
well as those of his very talented daughter,
Kartika Affandi, and other artists. This
is Jogja's best known art museum. |

Since 1988 Cemeti has been
a premier venue in Jogja for both Indonesian
and foreign contemporary artists. Solo exhibitions,
group exhibitions with performances, site
specific and happening art, discussions,
slide presentations and artists' talks are
held regularly. In 2006, Cemeti founders
Nindityo and Mella received the John D.
Rockerfeller III award for their efforts
in stimulating young artists in their careers,
for bringing Indonesian artists into the
international art scope, and for their own
artistic contributions. |

Jogja's newest art venue contains
900 square meters of exhibition space, featuring
young Indonesian and leading artists. Visitors
can also relax at the adjoining Banaran
Café, great for an after-gallery
coffee while watching the world go by away
from the traffic overlooking the alun-alun.
The café is open 9 am - 11 pm. Live
acoustic music 7:30 -11 pm every Friday

Godod Sutejo. A private gallery primarily
displaying Pak Godod's art, which he calls
alam sepi (“tranquil nature”),
focusing on spirituality and nature. The
gallery also houses the work of young artists

art galleries and museums, located near
Borobudur temple. Focuses on the works on
canvas, stone, pottery and wood of prolific
painter H. Widayat. Also houses his personal
collections. Young artists are featured
in a separate building set in an outstanding
