Project Tobong is a collaboration between British artist Helen Marshall with Indonesian artist Risang Yuwono and hosted by Indonesia Contemporary Art Network (iCAN), Yogyakarta.
This arts project documented the Ketoprak Tobong Kelana Bakti Budaya, one of the last remaining theatre troupe in Yogyakarta. Ketoprak is a musical folk drama that was popular in Java for a long time and has been grounded and rooted in community life for centuries.
Ketoprak Tobong is a traditional drama which is staged from one place to another within a certain time and is increasingly marginalized in the contemporary culture of Indonesia. Lack of government support and the invasion of modern urban culture makes their way of life evermore at risk.
Project Tobong exhibition is held in iCAN at Suryodiningratan 39 from December 28 to January 22. Special performances are held every Wednesday and Satur-day at 6 pm in Ketoprak Tobong Kelana Bakti Budaya, Bayen village, Purwomartani, Kalasan, Sleman.
