Travelling is an eye and mind opening and as a Tibetan proverb says: “Travelling is a return towards the essential”. What brings someone to travel and discover people, landscape, customs and light? And what does the journey have changed in you?
Diah Yulianti have been exploring for many years the beauty and sorrow of the forests of Kalimantan, have dialogued with humans and spirits in the depth of the nature. In 2009, Diah Yiulianti was the only Indonesian artist to be invited to exhibit her work for the 100 years anniversary of the Sufi branch of Alawiyya in Mostaganem, Algeria. There, she discovered not only the people of this Mediterranean country but also its soul. She discovered the light of the Mediterranean Sea and brought back a series of drawings: places, people paying homage to a Sufi saint’s tomb, landscapes. What is obvious in her works is that wherever she goes she captures immediately the essence of the spiritual dimension of a place.
Michel Romagnan have been working with wood all his life: teaching techniques or practicing the art of making furniture. Photography have been a secret passion since childhood and when he had an offer to teach in a Technical college near Alger in late 70’s he brought a camera with him. During 7 years, he traveled from sea to desert, mountains to plains in this beautiful country. These pictures are like dreams, memory of the past, traces of his love relationship with this country. Pictures that have been found again and for the first time exposed.
Al-Jazair means “the Islands” and these two artists give us images and feelings of this country far away from the Indonesian archipelago.
